Arm Lift

Contour and tighten your upper arms for sleeker definition

What Is an Arm Lift?

An arm lift—medically known as brachioplasty—is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the underside of the upper arms to create a smoother, more toned appearance. It specifically targets the loose, hanging skin often referred to as "bat wings" that develops from aging, weight fluctuations, or genetic predisposition.

Dr. Shah performs brachioplasty by making an incision along the inner arm, typically extending from the armpit to the elbow. Through this incision, he removes redundant skin and excess fat, then tightens the underlying supportive tissue to create a firmer arm contour. When only moderate correction is needed, a limited-incision technique confined to the armpit area may be used.

Unlike exercise alone—which can strengthen the biceps and triceps but cannot address loose skin—brachioplasty delivers a dramatic improvement in arm contour. The procedure is especially popular among patients who have undergone significant weight loss and are left with excess arm skin that causes discomfort, self-consciousness, and difficulty finding sleeves that fit properly.

What to Expect

01

Consultation

During your private consultation, Dr. Shah examines your upper arm skin laxity, fat distribution, and muscle tone. He'll discuss whether a traditional brachioplasty, limited-incision arm lift, or liposuction alone is most appropriate for your anatomy. You'll receive a customized surgical plan and have all your questions addressed.

02

Pre-Surgery Preparation

Two weeks before surgery, you'll stop blood-thinning medications and supplements. Dr. Shah's team arranges any necessary bloodwork and provides detailed pre-operative instructions. You'll also prepare loose, button-front clothing for the recovery period, since pulling shirts over your head will be limited initially.

03

The Procedure

Under general anesthesia, Dr. Shah makes an incision along the inner arm—carefully placed in the bicipital groove where it will be least visible. Excess skin and fat are removed, the underlying tissue is tightened, and the incision is closed with layered sutures for optimal scar quality. The procedure typically takes 2-3 hours for both arms.

04

Recovery & Results

You'll wear compression sleeves for several weeks to minimize swelling and support healing. Most patients return to desk work within 1-2 weeks and can resume upper-body exercise at 6 weeks. Results are visible immediately, with final contours apparent at 3-6 months as swelling fully resolves and scars mature.

Arm Lift Recovery Timeline

Every patient heals differently, but here's a general timeline for what to expect after your procedure.

Days 1-3

Keep arms elevated as much as possible to minimize swelling. Moderate soreness and tightness are normal. Prescribed pain medication keeps you comfortable. Avoid lifting anything heavier than a water bottle. Compression sleeves should be worn continuously.

Week 1

First follow-up visit with Dr. Shah. Sutures are checked and drains (if placed) are removed. Bruising and swelling begin to subside. Light daily activities such as walking and self-care are encouraged, but avoid reaching overhead or lifting.

Weeks 2-3

Most patients return to work and normal daily routines. Swelling continues to decrease noticeably. You can begin gentle range-of-motion exercises as approved by Dr. Shah. Scars will appear red and raised—this is a normal part of healing.

Weeks 4-6

Gradual return to light exercise and moderate lifting. Compression garment wear transitions to as-needed. The arms begin to show their improved contour as swelling resolves. Avoid heavy upper-body weightlifting until cleared.

Months 3-6

Full activity resumes including upper-body workouts. Scars continue to flatten and fade from red to pink to a pale line. Final arm contour is fully visible. Most patients are delighted with their ability to wear sleeveless clothing with confidence.

Arm Lift FAQ

Will I have visible scars from an arm lift?

Yes—an arm lift does leave a scar along the inner arm. Dr. Shah places the incision in the bicipital groove (the inner crease of the arm) where it is least visible during normal daily activities. Scars are thin and fade significantly over 6-12 months. For most patients, the tradeoff of a well-healed scar for eliminating loose, hanging skin is well worth it.

Can liposuction alone fix sagging arms?

Liposuction alone works well for patients who have good skin elasticity and excess fat but minimal loose skin. If you have significant skin laxity—especially after weight loss—liposuction alone will not tighten the skin and may actually worsen the sagging. During your consultation, Dr. Shah will determine which approach is best for your specific situation.

How long do arm lift results last?

Arm lift results are long-lasting. The excess skin removed during surgery is gone permanently. While natural aging will continue, your arms will always look significantly better than they would have without the procedure. Maintaining a stable weight is key to preserving your results long-term.

When can I exercise after an arm lift?

Light lower-body exercise (walking) can resume within 1-2 weeks. Moderate activity returns at 4-6 weeks. Heavy upper-body lifting and strenuous arm exercises should be avoided for at least 6 weeks or until Dr. Shah clears you. A gradual return to full fitness helps ensure optimal healing and scar quality.

Can an arm lift be combined with other procedures?

Absolutely. Arm lifts are commonly combined with a body lift, breast lift, tummy tuck, or liposuction—particularly for patients undergoing post-weight-loss body contouring. Combining procedures reduces overall recovery time and cost while delivering more comprehensive results in a single surgical session.

What is a mini arm lift?

A mini arm lift (limited-incision brachioplasty) is a less extensive version of the traditional arm lift. It uses a smaller incision limited to the armpit area and is ideal for patients with mild to moderate skin laxity concentrated near the upper portion of the arm. Dr. Shah can determine if you're a candidate during your consultation.

How much does an arm lift cost?

Arm lift costs depend on the technique used (traditional vs. mini), whether liposuction is added, and other factors. During your consultation, you'll receive a detailed, transparent quote that includes surgeon's fees, anesthesia, facility costs, and follow-up visits. Financing options are available to make the procedure more accessible.
